There are  some very good deals at EBAY For Ham Radio Amplifiers.You may find some older Ham Radio Amplifiers that still do an awesome job. Then there are the new Ham Radio Amplifiers that someone may be selling. Usually you will find that most Ham Radio Operators keep their Ham Radio equipment in good shape. You have to realize that if there is an emergency no one wants their equipment to fail. My only advise is to check out the seller for their ratings. That way you can determine if it is a risk due to bad reviews. Yes unfortunately there are a lot of scams going around all over the internet.    The categories of Ham Radio Amplifiers tend to fall into either a mobile amplifier or a base type amplifier. Some of the amplifiers are made for HF (high frequency), VHF (very high frequency) and UHF (ultra high frequency) . Generally the VHF and UHF amplifiers are for more of a mobile situation. I have seen some individuals use a mobile amplifier with a good power supply in a base type set up, but not to often. Today with base type Ham Radio Amplifiers you have the older tube type and then you have the newer Solid State Type Amplifier. You will find that the Solid State Amplifiers are much lighter than the tube type amplifiers due to not having the heavy transformer as well as some other components. Also you will find that some Ham Radio Amplifiers have the power supply in them and some of the Solid State Ham Radio Amplifiers have a separate power supply. If you need a power supply there are some good brands made by MFJ, Astron, Diamond, Icom as well as others. I run a Diamond power supply and it works great for my situation in my Ham Shack.
  The one thing you will find on Ebay is that you may have a wide variety of brands to choose from. Of course your situation may dictate what brand you go with. For example Ameritron tends to be more of a base amplifier while brands like texas star and mirage are more in the mobile class. There are plenty of other brands to choose from as well. Some may be definitely older than others, but still put out excellent power. You can also find amplifiers that have problems and are more for the person who wants to try and repair it, while others are just for parts. Also with Ebay watch the bids and the date as to when the auction expires. You also will find some auctions where you can just buy the item for a certain price and remember to check for shipping as it may not be included in the price. Remember to check out any and all information on the sale.
