Get That Ham Radio License So You Can Talk Around The World |
Today in Ham Radio you are going to need a Ham Radio License to be able to transmit on a given frequency. There are 3 licenses that anyone can achieve. There isn't any cost to getting the license. Well I should say the only cost is your time. Now you can go to various websites and keep answering the questions until you have them memorized. The only issue with this is that you really have not learned anything. You have only just memorized the answers to the questions. Now if your goal is to just get the license to be able to use a Ham Radio, then that is your choice and I do not judge you for it. I would suggest that you buy a book on Ham Radio and start reading. I would bet you become very interested and want to learn more.
The Three Main Ham Radio Licenses are:
- The Technician License
- The General License
- The Extra License
From what I have read most Ham Radio Operators only go to the General License as it gives you the capability to Transmit on most frequencies. Here is a chart below of the various bands for the particular Ham Radio License.
Here is a list below of some of the most popular websites to study for any of the Ham Radio Licenses. Some of these websites are free while others may have a fee. This is only a list of 10 websites. It should be noted that there are many more websites with lots of free study materials. Also some may be for a given area.

If I were going to suggest any books to study from I would choose either Gordon Wests Books or ARRL has excellent books to study from. There is a bookstore below the posts on this blog where you can search for Ham Radio Books. You can also go to my bookstore blog at
http://bloggersbooktime.blogspot.com/2014/11/books-for-ham-radio.html . There is an Amazon Bookstore below the post where you can search for a book. There are also book search ads off to the right of the posts for Ebay as well. My preference are the Gordon West series because they are fairly easy to understand and follow. Generally there is a cd that you can install on your computer so you can take practice tests.
Just remember to be able to transmit you will need the license for the proper bands. Also you have to take them in the order shown above. I myself studied for awhile and took the Technician License and passed it. Later after studying I went for the General License and passed it as well. I am studying a little at a time and plan on going for the Extra License. My Electrical Engineering and working as a Electronic Technician for 11 years should help. I just feel the more I can learn the more I can help someone else. The internet is an excellent source of information, but look out for viruses. I have been working as a computer technician since 1996 and I clean viruses off computers all the time.
Thank You for Reading from Dan KC2YTI 73s.
